The Small Torah

We opened a small Torah, and the room became vast. The rabbi lifted his hands. The students leaned toward ancient words. Flowers stood quietly between us, and my son sat among his people. Nothing was new. Nothing was old. The letters passed from hand to hand and carried us home.

ספר התורה הקטן

פתחנו ספר תורה קטן, והחדר נעשה רחב כאולם. הרב הרים את ידיו. התלמידים רכנו אל המילים העתיקות. הפרחים עמדו בשקט בינינו, ובני ישב בתוך עמו. דבר לא היה חדש. דבר לא היה ישן. האותיות עברו מיד ליד ונשאו אותנו הביתה.
